I joke about religion in some of my videos and blog entries but this short entry outlines why I don't actually find religious belief to be something to laugh at.
I would find it funny if I didn't feel so bad for religious people. Biology, astronomy, physics, psychology etc are fascinating and enlightening areas of study. When a person comes to understand these things they have a greater sense of what it is to be human, the opportunities we have and the potentially limitless possibilities of our awesome species.
To shy away from these things in favor of Bronze Age myths is detrimental to yourself, your community, your children and society as a whole.
On top of that, the religious are often plagued with guilt and an overwhelming sense of weakness. Combine that with their unhealthy dependency on an imaginary being and you've got a seriously messed up person. The worst part is, they are the majority of the Earth’s population.
Making fun of religious belief is fine and it's a great way to attract attention to the fallacies of holy books and dogma but we must remember the purpose of rational thought and the responsibility of those who possess it in abundance; to spread knowledge and work toward a brighter future for our world.
