But have you actually READ the bible?

Plenty of people have read the bible and are still atheists. I have not read that entire waste of shelf space cover to cover myself, but I don't have to. I've read Genesis, and it reads like a fairy tale. I've read Revelation and it resembles either a mad man's ramblings as he's possessed by some drug induced hallucination or the imaginative writings of a gifted story teller. Neither book sounds like it came from something beyond human. I've read other parts as well and I've found the same results.

Jonah living in a big fish...sounds like a fairy tale

Adam being made from the dirt and Eve being made from Adams rib....sounds like a fairy tale

An old man building a giant ship and gathering a pair from every species on the planet including 800 million species of insects and getting them to reproduce...sounds like a fairy tale, a weird and particularly ridiculous fairy tale which has incidentally been PROVEN false by the fact that a worldwide flood a few thousand years ago would have left a mark in the fossil record and there is no such mark. On top of that we have proof of civilizations predating the writing of Genesis which would obviously have been destroyed in the flood and they were not.

A man being born of a virgin, walking on water, curing the sick, healing the blind and coming back from the dead...sounds like a comic book or some sci fi movie.

I'm sorry, but to those of us who were neither indoctrinated into this garbage as children nor lack adequate critical thinking skills, the bible is just too silly to be taken seriously.

It's funny...but it's really not funny

I joke about religion in some of my videos and blog entries but this short entry outlines why I don't actually find religious belief to be something to laugh at.

I would find it funny if I didn't feel so bad for religious people. Biology, astronomy, physics, psychology etc are fascinating and enlightening areas of study. When a person comes to understand these things they have a greater sense of what it is to be human, the opportunities we have and the potentially limitless possibilities of our awesome species.

To shy away from these things in favor of Bronze Age myths is detrimental to yourself, your community, your children and society as a whole.

On top of that, the religious are often plagued with guilt and an overwhelming sense of weakness. Combine that with their unhealthy dependency on an imaginary being and you've got a seriously messed up person. The worst part is, they are the majority of the Earth’s population.

Making fun of religious belief is fine and it's a great way to attract attention to the fallacies of holy books and dogma but we must remember the purpose of rational thought and the responsibility of those who possess it in abundance; to spread knowledge and work toward a brighter future for our world.

When will the world end?

The end of the world has been foretold for thousands of years. Prophecies aimed at both the distant future and the frighteningly imminent have been shouted from the hilltops and spread throughout the lands drawing millions to believe in them. Many Christians firmly believe that the end will come within their lifetimes and that the faithful will be ‘saved’ and whisked off to heaven while the non-believers are left behind here on earth. Many believe that the Antichrist will promise to bring peace to the world but shall instead unleash the most horrific period of human history known as the End Times. There is considerable fear mounting about the end of the Mayan long count calendar, which falls on December 21st 2012. Do these biblical prophecies predict the same thing that the Mayans foretold? Are we the final generation of humans? Are the problems that plague the us today like wars, religious fundamentalism, climate change, the looming threat of a pandemic and the global economic crises setting the stage for the end of days? Those who answer this question with any degree of certitude must surely be overconfident but are those who ask it asking the right question?
Let’s first examine the Mayan prophecy if it should be called that. The Mayans simply had a different method of keeping track of time. They used several calendars; some were merely days long and others like the Tzolk’in, which lasts 260 days and the Haab, which represents a full 365 day year. Another count, known as the Baktun is the one that most are catching here say about. If we were going by the Mayan calendar than today we would be very close to the end of the 12th Baktun and thus the end of a "Great Cycle." This great cycle is believed (by some) to have begun on August 11th 3114 BC, and will end on December 21st 2012. One thought that comes to mind is that the Mayans called this a cycle; they started it over five thousand years ago and perhaps they just didn’t feel the need to start an entirely new cycle that wouldn’t begin for such a long time. This would be enough to reconsider if not dismiss the entire notion if it were just that simple.
Another argument suggesting a major event at the end of the Mayan long count calendar is that the end date (if it has been properly calculated) will fall on the same day as an astronomical event that only takes place every 26,000 years. The Earth, the sun and the center of the galaxy will all be in perfect alignment. While it is true that this galactic alignment will occur on December 21st 2012 it is not true that it only happens once every 26,000 years. In fact, it happens every single year. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. The center of the galaxy is, from the right perspective, in perfect alignment with every single object in the galaxy. All the alignment means is that from our perspective there is a straight line from us through the sun and onto the galactic center.
The Christian end times and the Mayan long count have nothing to do with each other and that is a statement which most will probably agree upon. What many may not agree on is that they are both in all likelihood equally meaningless.
Let’s start off with the Antichrist. The Christian belief in an Antichrist rising to worldwide power is a misnomer for two reasons. The first reason this claim is inaccurate is that the term Antichrist refers to anyone who doesn’t believe in Christ. Atheists, agnostics, Muslims, polytheists and Hindu’s are just a few anti-Christ according do the bible. What most people are thinking of when they speak of an evil world leader is the passage in the book of Revelation that says,
"And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." This clearly calls this evil ruler The Beast, not the Antichrist.
The second reason this concept (along with the belief that the rest of Revelation is an end-time prediction) is that it was written by a man in 90 AD who starts it off by saying,
"The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass."
The writer of Revelation, whose name was John, was reaching out to the frightened early Christians of his time who were oppressed by the Roman emperor Nero. In addition, Nero’s name, when calculated using a numerology game that people in those days played, adds up to six hundred and sixty six.
John never intended for his writings to be perceived as a prophecy that would be left unfulfilled for 2,000 years. He meant for it to give hope and courage to early Christians so that they wouldn’t succumb to the Roman oppression and denounce their faith.
We must all face the world in which we exist today and not rely on folklore and fantasy to guide us through. The future has no limits other than what we put on it and our fate could be that of a great and peaceful people. We may one day uncover the mysteries of the universe and discover that the purpose of life is to make life better and reach levels of love and understanding beyond anything that we can imagine today. So when we ask when will the world end, the answer could be…never. What we should be asking ourselves is how do I help people and how do we as a race ensures that we carry on for thousands of generations to come.

Q. Why do I Insult Religious People? A. I shouldn't but it's hard not to sometimes.

I saw a question on Yahoo Answers asking why Non-Religious people insult Religious people. This was part of my answer.

The reason I insult religious people and more specifically religion, is that religions have caused so many problems in this world and I really want the world to be a better place. I wrote a novel and a I want to get it turned into movies so that i can use the money I make from it to help the world. I make fun of religious people because they believe in this terrible nonsense that has caused so much needless suffering through the centuries. How many wars have been faught over various gods? How many more will be waged in the future? How many more young men like my best friend Spec. Christopher M. Wilson have to die in wars that began because of religious disputes? I shouldn't insult people but sometimes my patience wears thin.

Is the question of to believe or not to believe as simple as right and wrong? (Hint... Yes)

Some atheists, probably most are truly certain that all of the religions are nonsense. Most religious people believe that all but THEIR religion is nonsense. So two things: 1 close to 100 if not 100 % of the world’s population think that most or all religions are nonsense2: Atheists and Theists AGREE that most or all of the worlds religions are nonsense. So why are we arguing? We all agree. Religion is nonsense?

To Pro Life Advocates - A Lesson in Logic

I've been thinking about how pro-life people, you know those who say abortion is murder and can't be allowed and blah blah blah and I have a question/argument that may appease them from a philosophical point of view...

- Below is a rant from a Mr. Wingnut Prolife

Abbortion must be outlawed. It is a crime against God! It is a crime against nature! It is the most horrific and brutal thing ever to be allowed on this earth. Any women who has or any man who allows his wife to abort an innocent child will burn in Hell! How could they expect to be allowed into God's kingdom to live with the very child they refused to allow to live on earth? Anyone who's had an abortion has a rotton soul and that rotton soul will surely rott in Hell beyond the grave!

My wife had something to say as well
Do stupid liberal atheist women think that there won't be any consiquences for their actions? I know for a fact that God will punish you in the end evildoer!

- My Response

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Prolife,

What makes you think a swab of microscopic goo or even a partially formed fetus has a soul? If humans do have souls then they are part of our consciousness, otherwise when we died we wouldn't bring anything from this life to the afterlife thus making Heaven or Hell meaningless. If you're rewarded for your earthly works or for your belief in Christ with eternity in heaven than you must remember why you've been rewarded. A swab of microscopic goo or a partially formed human fetus is not conscious of it's own existence, therefore it could not have developed a soul seeing as how the soul is a product of consciousness.
